Abstract
Today, thousands of sensors continuously monitor water quality across the United States, capturing vital details about storms, pollution, and overall ecosystem health. However, because this data is collected by diverse agencies and independent researchers, the information remains highly fragmented. This organizational barrier prevents scientists from grasping the broader, continental picture of our water health. To solve this, the scientific community must "harmonize" these independent networks by standardizing their data into a single, interoperable public resource. This unification will close critical knowledge gaps, empowering researchers to build better predictive models, identify the causes of water degradation, and accurately forecast dangerous events like algal blooms. Achieving this shared infrastructure requires shifting how scientific research is rewarded and supported, ultimately allowing us to better protect and manage our vulnerable freshwater systems.
