Abstract

The dataset accompanies the paper "The influence of lakes and reservoirs on estimated flood peaks at hourly vs. daily timescale in the Alps" by Götte et al. in Hydrology and Earth System Sciences.

The dataset contains flood peaks identified on hourly and daily timescales over Switzerland. Additionally, it contains the estimated catchment shapes of the six lakes that were considered in this study in addition to all water body catchments from FOEN (2021).

Title: Daily and subdaily flood peaks in Switzerland

Contact: Jonas Götte, jonas.goette@slf.ch; Manuela Brunner, manuela.brunner@env.ethz.ch

Description: The dataset accompanies the manuscript "The influence of lakes and reservoirs on estimated flood peaks at hourly vs. daily timescale in the Alps" by Götte et al. in Hydrology and Earth System Sciences. The dataset contains flood peaks identified on hourly and daily timescales over Switzerland and four examples of daily and subdaily (hourly or 15-minute resolution) flood peaks up- and downstream of water bodies. Additionally, it contains the estimated catchment shapes of the six lakes that were considered in this study beyond publically available water body catchments for Switzerland by FOEN (2021).

FOEN 2021: Waterbody catchment areas, https://data.geo.admin.ch/browser/index.html#/collections/ch.bafu.wasser-einzugsgebietsgliederung/items/wasser-einzugsgebietsgliederung?.language=en (last accessed: 2025-08-26).

Structure of the files for the large-sample analysis stored within "Peaks_Switzerland.zip"; with the official gauge ID given in the file name:
	- "HydroYear": Hydrological Year (starting in Oct of the previous calendar year)
	- "Hourly_Max": Maximum hourly discharge [m3/s]
	- "Daily_Max": Maximum daily discharge [m3/s]

Structure of the files for the up-downstream analysis stored within "Up_Down_CaseStudies.zip"; with the official gauge ID given in the file name:
	- "HydroYear": Hydrological Year (starting in Oct of the previous calendar year)
	- "AnnMax_15": Maximum 15-minute discharge [m3/s]
	- "AnnMax_Daily": Maximum daily discharge [m3/s]
	for Walensee:
	- "AnnMax_Hourly": Maximum hourly discharge [m3/s]

All streamflow records in "Up_Down_CaseStudies.zip" are trimmed to only include the period after reservoir construction.

The file "LakeCatchments_OutsideCH.zip" contains a shapefile with water body catchment areas for the water bodies: Mindelsee, Titisee, Schluchsee, Lac des Rousses, Lac de Saint-Point and Lac de l'Entonnoir.

The streamflow data was sourced from:
Federal Office for the Environment, FOEN (Switzerland)
Bayerisches Landesamt für Umwelt (Bavaria/Germany)
