Abstract

This Hydroshare resource contains river stage information collected in the state of Iowa, at 290 locations where Bridge Mounted River Stage Sensors (BMRS) are installed by the Iowa Flood Center (IFC). The temporal window of the dataset is 2010 to 2020. The temporal resolution of the data is 15-minute. The units of the river stage data is feet above sea level.

Dataset of river stages in Iowa

This Hydroshare resource contains river stage information collected in the state of Iowa, at 290 locations where Bridge Mounted River Stage Sensors (BMRS) are installed by the Iowa Flood Center. The temporal window of the dataset is 2010 to 2021. The temporal resolution of the data is 15-minute. The units of the river stage data is feet above sea level.

Contents

The data is separated by folders in three categories: 1) raw data, 2) quality controlled data and 3) quality-control flags. The data is stored in plain text files separated by comma (.csv). The filename has the syntax [site_id]_[category].csv , where [site_id] is an unique identifier for each BMRSS.

Raw Data

Contains the original stage data from the BMRSS. The filename syntax is [site_id]_raw.csv . Each file has three columns: ts: timestamp of the data in UTC. unix_time: timestamp of data in number of seconds elapsed since January 1, 1970 (midnight UTC/GMT). value: the stage value data in feet above sea level.

Quality-controlled Data

Contains the stage data after applying quality control. The filename syntax is [site_id]_qc.csv. Each file has three columns: ts: timestamp of the data in UTC. unix_time: timestamp of data in number of seconds elapsed since January 1, 1970 (midnight UTC/GMT). value: the stage value data in feet above sea level.

Quality-control flags

Indicates the criterion used to filter each stage value removed from the original raw dataset. The filename syntax is [site_id]_meta.csv. Each file has 6 columns: ts: timestamp of the data in UTC. unix_time: timestamp of data in number of seconds elapsed since January 1, 1970 (midnight UTC/GMT). flag_peak : indicates if the value exceeded the high-value threshold ("TRUE" or "FALSE") flag_low : indicates if the value exceeded the low-value threshold ("TRUE" or "FALSE") flag_gradient : indicates if the value exceeded the maximum-difference threshold ("TRUE" or "FALSE") flag_qc : indicates if the value had to be removed from the original dataset ("TRUE" or "FALSE")

ifc_bs_ID_list.csv

Metadata for each BMRSS site. Contains the site_id, spatial location and name of each BMRSS. The file has 4 columns: ID: indicates the identification number of each BMRSS Longitude: Indicates the longitude in which the BMRSS is located Latitude: Indicates the latitude in which the BMRSS is located Description: Name and Location of the BMRSS

ifc_bs.shp

A shape file with the location of each BMRSS
