Abstract

This dataset provides streamflow and hydro-meteorological time series (temperature, evapotranspiration, precipitation, snow-water-equivalent (SWE), and snowmelt) for 937 catchments in Central and Northern Europe for the period 1969-2011.

Streamflow and hydro-meteorological variables for 937 GRDC catchments in Europe (1969-2011)

Authors: Manuela Brunner
Last update: 17.08.2021

This dataset provides streamflow and hydro-meteorological time series (temperature, evapotranspiration, precipitation, snow-water-equivalent (SWE), and snowmelt) for 937 catchments in Central and Northern Europe for the period 1969-2011.
Streamflow data were downloaded from the Global Runoff Data Centre: https://www.bafg.de/GRDC/EN/Home/homepage_node.html
Catchment boundaries were derived from the global streamflow indices and metadata archive (GSIM): https://essd.copernicus.org/articles/10/765/2018/
Average areal hydro-meteorological variables for each catchment were derived from the gridded ERA5-Land data set: https://cds.climate.copernicus.eu/cdsapp#!/dataset/reanalysis-era5-land?tab=overview

Dataset components:

(1) Shapefile of the 937 catchments
File name: GRDC_selection_937_Europe.shp. The attribute 'grdb_no' is used to label the time series files provided in (2) and (3).
(2) Daily streamflow time series from 1969-2011 for each of the 937 catchments
variable names: _Q_Day.Cmd
(3) Daily time series of the hydro-meteorological variables temperature, evapotranspiration, precipitation, SWE, and snowmelt for period 1981-2011
One file is provided for each variable. First column corresponds to date, remaining columns represent time series for each catchment. Columns are labeled using the 'grdb_no' ID provided in the shapefile.
File names: ERA5_Europe_GRDC_.
variable_name: evap for evapotranspiration, precip for precipitation, smelt for snowmelt, soil for soil moisture, swe for snow-water-equivalent, temp for temperature
