This resource is Supporting Information for Benson, L.M. and D.C. Mays (2026), Estimating snowmelt infiltration by numerical integration of soil moisture data, Hydrological Processes (in press). The root directory includes four files and two folders: File 1: readme.txt File 2: Benson-Mays-Analysis-Oscillation.pdf File 3: Benson-Mays-Validation-Input.pdf File 4: Benson-Mays-Validation-Results.pdf Folder 1: Bush-etal-2020 Folder 2: data The contents of these files and folders are as follows. File 1: readme.txt This file provides the metadata for this HydroShare resource. File 2: Benson-Mays-Analysis-Oscillation.pdf This document shows how adding virtual sample depths (with Matlab function backfill.m) resolves oscillations in the estimated cumulative infiltration from HYDRUS-1D. File 3: Benson-Mays-Validation-Input.pdf This document shows how precipitation and runoff data (extracted from Microsoft Excel workbook Bush-etal-2020-Infiltration.xlsx and processed with Matlab function synchronize.m) generate the optional third input file tQ.txt for the eight cases of model validation. File 4: Benson-Mays-Validation-Results.pdf This document shows moisture content time series, total water depth versus time, and estimated snowmelt infiltration for the eight cases of model validation from Bush et al. (2020). Folder 1: Bush-etal-2020 This folder contains three files: File 1.1: Bush-etal-2020-Summary.xlsx Microsoft Excel worksheet to summarize validation results from Bush et al. (2020). File 1.2: Bush-etal-2020-Moisture-Content.xlsx Microsoft Excel workbook to organize moisture content data from Bush et al. (2020). This workbook contains the following tabs: Tab 1: AguaSalud_VWC_sensor_MAT_15min, raw data downloaded from HydroShare (Bush, 2021) as AguaSalud_VWC_sensor_MAT_15min.csv. Tab 2: Annotated MAT, same as Tab 1, but with annotation. Tab 3: MAT_5_M, same as Tab 2, but filtered to event MAT5M. Tab 4: MAT_5_M_tTheta, same as previous, formatted to export text file tTheta.txt Tab 5: MAT_5_U, same as Tab 2, but filtered to event MAT5U. Tab 6: MAT_5_U_tTheta, same as previous, formatted to export text file tTheta.txt Tab 7: AguaSalud_VWC_sensor_PAS_15min, raw data downloaded from HydroShare (Bush, 2021) as AguaSalud_VWC_sensor_PAS_15min.csv. Tab 8: Annotated PAS, same as Tab 7, but with annotation. Tab 9: PAS_6_M, same as Tab 8, but filtered to event PAS6M. Tab 10: PAS_6_M_tTheta, same as previous, formatted to export text file tTheta.txt Tab 11: PAS_6_U, same as Tab 8, but filtered to event PAS6U. Tab 12: PAS_6_U_tTheta, same as previous, formatted to export text file tTheta.txt This pattern repeats for the other events PAS7M, PAS7U, PAS22M, and PAS22U. File 1.3: Bush-etal-2020-Infiltration.xlsx Microsoft Excel workbook to organize precipitation and runoff data from Bush et al. (2020), from which infiltration is calculated (and propagated measurement error). This workbook contains the following tabs: Tab 1: MAT_5_LL, raw data downloaded from HydroShare (Bush, 2021) as MAT_5_LL.csv. Tab 2: PAS_6_LL, raw data downloaded from HydroShare (Bush, 2021) as PAS_6_LL.csv. Tab 3: PAS_7_LL, raw data downloaded from HydroShare (Bush, 2021) as PAS_7_LL.csv. Tab 4: PAS_22_LL, raw data downloaded from HydroShare (Bush, 2021) as PAS_22_LL.csv. Tab 5: MAT_5_M, same as above, but with annotation. Tab 6: MAT_5_M_PR, same as previous, but formatted to export text file MAT5M.txt. Tab 7: MAT_5_U, same as above, but with annotation. Tab 8: MAT_5_U_PR, same as previous, but formatted to export text file MAT5U.txt. This pattern repeats for the other events PAS6M, PAS6U, PAS7M, PAS7U, PAS22M, and PAS22U. Folder 2: data This folder contains three files and 13 subfolders. File 3.1: infiltration.m Matlab function to estimate snowmelt infiltration from soil moisture data. File 3.2: synchronize.m Matlab function to estimate infiltration rate from precipitation and runoff data. File 3.3: backfill.m Matlab function to interpolate virtual sample depths for soil moisture, assuming either linear interpolation (method ‘LIN’) or error function interpolation (method ‘ERF’). There are 13 subfolders: (1) Copper-Mountain-SNOTEL-May-2020, (2) HYDRUS-1D, (3) HYDRUS-1D-Virtual-Depths, (4) Kenai-Moose-Pens-SNOTEL-April-2020, (5) MAT5M, (6) MAT5U, (7) PAS5M, (8) PAS6U, (9) PAS7M, (10) PAS7U, (11) PAS22M, (12) PAS22U, and (13) Truckee-2-SNOTEL-April-2020. Each subfolder “n” contains the following four files: File 3.n.1: units-L-T.txt Records self-consistent units of length and time. File 3.n.2: depth.txt The first input text file containing space delimited sample depths. File 3.n.3: tTheta.txt The second input text file containing time and moisture content data. File 3.n.4: infiltration.txt Output file of infiltration.m containing time, cumulative infiltration, and error. Each subfolder except the three SNOTEL application cases also contain the following: File 3.n.5: tQ.txt The optional third input text file, contains time and specific discharge. The subfolder for the verification simulation (2) HYDRUS-1D additionally contains two files and one subfolder containing the HYDRUS-1D simulation: File 3.2.1: hydrostatic.h1d Machine-readable input file for HYDRUS-1D. File 3.2.2: hydrostatic-metadata.docx Microsoft Word document explaining the HYDRUS-1D model. Folder: hydrostatic Contains the input and output file from the HYDRUS-1D simulation. The subfolder for the verification simulation (3) HYDRUS-1D-Virtual-Depths additionally contains two files related to the interpolated virtual sample depths for soil moisture: File 3.3.1: new_depth.txt Modified first input text file, contains space delimited sample depths. File 3.3.2: new_tTheta.txt Modified second input text file, contains time and moisture content data. The eight subfolders for model validation MAT5M, MAT5U, PAS5M, PAS6U, PAS7M, PAS7U, PAS22M, and PAS22U each contain one additional text file extracted from Microsoft Excel workbook Bush-etal-2020-Infiltration.xlsx. For example, in folder MAT5M, this file is called MAT5M.txt, and serves as an input file for the Matlab function synchronize.m used to calculate the optional third input file tQ.txt for each validation case. The three subfolders for the SNOTEL application cases also contain the following four files: [site-name]-SNOTEL.xlsx Microsoft Excel workbook with data downloaded from the SNOTEL. rainfall.txt Tab-delimited text file with time in the 1st column (day number in water year 2020) and daily rainfall depth in the 2nd column [mm]. SWE.txt Tab-delimited text file with time in the 1st column (day number in water year 2020) and snow water equivalent (SWE) [mm] in the 2nd column [mm]. temperature.txt Tab-delimited text file with time in the 1st column (day number in water year 2020) and temperature in the 2nd column [C].
