Abstract
LOCATION: B1 is located on a ridgetop east of Niwot Ridge at an altitude of 2,591 meters, in a clearing surrounded by low-density montane forest. This high-elevation site has been used for climate monitoring since the 1950s.
ABSTRACT: A modern meteorological tripod was installed at B1 in 2020 to update the historic monitoring site with modern instrumentation. Measurements include air temperature, wind speed and direction, snow depth, precipitation, incoming and outgoing shortwave and longwave radiation, soil moisture, soil temperature, soil electrical conductivity, and soil volumetric water content. Data were recorded at 10-minute intervals.
B1 is part of the long-term Boulder Creek CZO and Dynamic Water Critical Zone monitoring network and is part of a network of sites along an elevational gradient from the foothills to the Continental Divide.
Data collection for this dataset concluded on October 2, 2024, following the end of the Dynamic Water Critical Zone (DWCZ) project. The B1 monitoring site may remain physically deployed; however, this dataset is no longer actively maintained or updated as part of DWCZ.

CZNet DWCZ -- Climate, Meteorology -- B1 Meteorological Site (B1_Met) -- (2020-2024)
OVERVIEW
Description/Abstract
Precipitation data is collected from a ridge-top climate station East of Niwot Ridge (B1 at 2591 m) throughout the year using a chart recorder. Initially, instrumentation consisted of an 8-inch metal rain gauge with receiving rim about 3 feet off the ground and measurements were made on approximately weekly basis. More recently, instrumentation consisted of a Fegusson type weighing rain gage. Precipitation was caught in a bucket containing ethylene glycol (to melt snow) and light oil (to prevent evaporation). As the weight of the bucket increased, the pen moved up via a spring mechanism and recorded on a rotating chart. Precipitation was recorded on a continuous basis.

Comments
An EasyEntry program was written in order to efficiently get the precipitation data contained in the 3 Marr et al. reports (listed above) into an electronic form. Data were entered and rekeyed during the early summer of 1993 by Susan Kindig and Mike Sannes. The resulting files were further processed and archived on niwotlter, the NWT LTER server. These files were the source of the data that appear in the data section in this file.The weighing-bucket gauges are currently not in use, although partial precipitation records may exist for the post-1964 period.
