Abstract
This resource provides data and code supporting an uncertainty-aware assessment of long-term lake-surface-area changes at Chaiwopu Lake, an arid terminal lake in Xinjiang, Northwest China. It includes compiled hydroclimatic and groundwater-use data, land-cover-derived ecological indicators, and code for lake surface-area extraction. These materials are intended to support the examination of long-term lake-surface changes and their relationships with hydroclimatic conditions, groundwater use, and land-cover dynamics. The resource facilitates transparent documentation and reuse of the data and methods underlying the associated study.

1. Overview
TThis resource provides data and code for analyzing long-term lake-surface-area changes at Chaiwopu Lake, Xinjiang, Northwest China. It includes annual hydroclimatic and related data, land-cover-derived indicators, and Google Earth Engine (GEE) JavaScript code for extracting lake surface area from Landsat imagery.
2. Files Included
2.1 Research Data.csv
Contains annual records for 1990–2022, with the following columns:
-
Year: Calendar year. -
Area: Lake surface area. -
Temperature: Temperature data. -
Precipitation: Precipitation data. -
Cropland: Cropland-related data. -
Groundwater extraction observations: Observational records of groundwater extraction. -
Population: Population data.
Variable definitions, units, data sources, and individual temporal coverage are documented in the associated publication and supplementary materials.
2.2 fvc_hbai_data_compilation_v1.csv
Contains annual data for 2004–2020.
-
Year: Calendar year. -
HBAI: Habitat-based biological abundance index, a land-cover-derived proxy for habitat-support capacity rather than a direct biological measurement. -
FVC: Fractional vegetation cover within the assessment area.
HBAI and FVC are auxiliary indicators and should not be interpreted as direct measurements of aquatic biodiversity or proof of ecological recovery.
2.3 Lake_Area_Extraction_Code
Contains JavaScript code for Google Earth Engine to extract monthly lake surface area from Landsat imagery. The workflow includes image filtering, cloud and cloud-shadow masking, MNDWI calculation, threshold-based water classification, pixel-area calculation, and CSV export.
The script uses Landsat 5 and Landsat 7 Collection 2 Level-2 surface-reflectance imagery, with an MNDWI threshold of 0.1. Users need access to Google Earth Engine and should check the study-area geometry, target dates, image filters, and export settings before running the script.
