Abstract
This dataset contains streamflow drought and flood events for 1002 gauging stations in the Contiguous United States between 1970 and 2022. Drought and floods were identified using methodology outlined in Götte & Brunner (2024) and are characterized by there start and end date. The dataset accompanies the paper "Hydrological drought-to-flood transitions across different hydroclimates in the United States" by Götte & Brunner published in Water Resources Research under DOI 10.1029/2023WR036504.

Title: Streamflow droughts and floods in the Contiguous US between 1970-2022 Contact: Jonas Götte, jonas.goette@slf.ch Description: This dataset contains streamflow drought and flood events for 1002 gauging stations in the Contiguous United States between 1970 and 2022. Drought and floods were identified using the methodology outlined in Götte & Brunner (2024) and are characterized by there start and end date. This dataset accompanies the paper "Hydrological drought-to-flood transitions across different hydroclimates in the United States" by Götte and Brunner published in WRR under DOI 10.1029/2023WR036504. Structure of the folder: - a droughts.zip folder: contains drought events extracted for each gauging station, - a floods.zip folder: contains flood events extracted for each gauging station, - a metadata file: contains catchment characteristics and climate characteristics for each catchment, - a ReadMe file. Structure of each file in the droughts.zip and floods.zip folders: - "Begin": start date of the event; - "End": end date of the event. Structure of the meta data file: - "site_id": ID of the catchment, can be used to link this meta data to the event data in droughts.zip and floods.zip - "drainSqKm": catchment size [km²] - "elev_med": median catchment elevation [m] - "gage.class": catchment regulation status - "precip": average catchment precipitation [mm/yr] - "temp": average catchment temperature [°C] - "SNOW_PCT": average percentage of precipitation falling as snow [%] - "PET": average potential evaporation [mm/yr] - "aridity": catchment aridity The streamflow data used for event identification was retrieved from the USGS (Water Data for the Nation), https://waterdata.usgs.gov/nwis. All meta data originates from the GAGES-II database (Falcone, J., 2011, GAGES-II: Geospatial Attributes of Gages for Evaluating Streamflow: U.S. Geological Survey data release, https://doi.org/10.5066/P96CPHOT.)
