Abstract
We present stable isotope measurements (d18O and dD) of 3698 soil lysimeter waters from 53 forest plots in Switzerland collected between 2019 and 2022. We interpolated stable isotopes of precipitation (d18O and dD) for the 53 forest plots from isotope data collected by the Swiss Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN) National Groundwater Monitoring (NAQUA) ISOT module. Precipitation isotope data was interpolated for forest plot locations following the method in (Allen et al., 2018). Additionally, we include Matlab codes that will fit sinusoidal functions to data from each site for precipitation, and each site and soil depth for lysimeters. Lastly, there is a spreadsheet showing the calculations of young water fractions from the sinusoidal function amplitudes.

README Description of files: lysimeter_d18O_dD.csv Contains 3698 measurements of d18O and dD (permil notation, relative to VSMOW) of lysimeter waters collected from 53 forest plots in Switzerland. Site number distinguishes the different forest plots. Lysimeter depth is in cm. Each lysimeter sample at a given depth was collected by combining the waters yielded from approximately 8 different lysimeters at that same depth throughout the forest plot. plot_locations.csv Contains the latitude and longitude (in decimal degrees) for each of the 53 forest plots. interpolated_precipitation_d18O.csv Contains interpolated precipitation oxygen isotope ratios (permil notation, relative to VSMOW) for each of the 53 forest plots. Primary precipitation oxygen isotope data were collected at 13 precipitation stations across Switzerland operated by the Swiss Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN) National Groundwater Monitoring (NAQUA) ISOT module. NAQUA data can be accessed by contacting hydrogeologie@bafu.admin.ch and are subject to the terms and conditions set forth by NAQUA Lysimeter_d18O.csv This file contains the appropriately formatted data to fit a sinusoidal function to data from each site and lysimeter depth. It will be read by the Matlab script: Lysimeter_amplitude_code.m This Matlab script will fit a sinusoidal function to lysimeter d18O data (see Kirchner 2016a,b for further information about the sinusoidal function). Precipitation_d18O_w_weights.csv This file contains the appropriately formatted data to fit a sinusoidal function to precipitation data. It will be read by the Matlab script: Precip_amplitude_code.m This Matlab script will fit a sinusoidal function (weighted by precipitation amount) to precipitation d18O data. Fyw results.xlsx This file shows the amplitude for the lysimeter and precipitation sinusoidal functions calculated from the Matlab scripts. It then shows how the young water fraction is calculated as the ratio of the lysimeter water amplitude to the precipitation amplitude.
