Abstract

The management of the lower Mississippi River by use of diversions is important for flood risk
management and restoration. This study explores an alternative approach to managing flood-risk
reduction through the implementation of the Union diversion. The location of the diversion may allow for
the retention of riverine resources, namely freshwater, sediment, and nutrients, in the freshwater
Maurepas swamp. Additionally, this strategy may assist in managing salinity concentrations in adjacent
basins for fishing industry benefits. This approach has the potential to maximize ecosystem benefits while
maintaining compliance with flood-risk reduction regulatory triggers.
