Abstract
This project takes a comprehensive snapshot of the water chemistry in the cave system of Manatee Springs State Park, Levy County, Florida, USA to gain more information on its hydrology and to try to understand the source of nitrate pollution shown in our preliminary data sets. We will measure nitrate and comprehensive water chemistry parameters at 10 critical locations in the cave system, including the Blue Water tunnel, a likely source of contamination, as well as points up- and downstream, to assess the scale and periodicity of the contamination. We will assess water quality 4 times a year (February, May, August, November) with the schedule starting in February after any cold weather fronts have passed, and immediately before the agricultural growing season (March). This schedule also positions sampling runs at the beginning and end of Florida’s rainy season.
Karst Underwater Research (KUR) volunteer cave divers will perform dives, collect, log, and prepare water samples for analysis using a standard protocol. Divers will carry a YSI EXO3 datasonde throughout the dives to record water pH, temperature, specific conductivity, and dissolved oxygen in situ. A PME miniDOT dissolved oxygen sensor and a van Essen CTD diver recording specific conductivity, depth, and temperature, will also be used to record water characteristics if more than one dive team is deployed simultaneously. Water will be collected from 9 targeted locations, each marked with a cave marker to ensure consistency in sample locations. After collection, water grab samples will be appropriately preserved and submitted to laboratories at AEL (Gainesville) and USF (Tampa) following established procedures.
