ABSTRACT:

This resource contains water isotope data from precipitation at three Montana Precipitation Isotope Network (MTPIN) samplers in the Gallatin Valley; Lick Creek Snotel (LCS), MSU Horticulture Farm (MHF), and MSU Central Agricultural Research Center (CAS). Precipitation samples are collected monthly from each location, collecting via a liquid water isotope sampler (IS) that prevents evaporation of water within the sampler during all months, an open topped bucket (BU) for snow collection during the colder months, and a snow tube (ST) collector for snowpack sampling. Surface water samples are additionally collected from Hyalite Creek at a USGS gauge (HY06) upon retrieving precipitation samples from LCS. ST samples are taken from the existing snowpack at the time of sampling, BU samples are representative of new precipitation rather than existing snowpack. Samples are stored in 40 mL scintillation vials that prevent evaporative fractionation of the sample. Sample aliquots are filtered from scintillation vials into 2 mL injection vials for sample analysis via the Los Gatos Research (LGR) Liquid Water Isotope Analyzer (LWIA) Integrated Cavity Output Spectroscopy (ICOS) instrument.
